It's official: Mozilla is creating an an Open Web platform for mobile. Built of the web, enabling powerful new functionality, and completely open. It's very exciting stuff!

In order to demonstrate the progress that the Boot to Gecko team has made, we've created a concept UX called Gaia. Our goals for Gaia were to demonstrate the functionality, reliability and creative potential of the open web as a mobile platform. "It works, and it's going to be amazing." We're very excited with the result. The following is a quick tour of Gaia, and what it means.

&#60;img src="http://payload29.cargocollective.com/1/0/24332/2888526/b2g_screens_1_11_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="618" width_o="1000" height_o="618" src_o="http://payload29.cargocollective.com/1/0/24332/2888526/b2g_screens_1_11_o.jpg" data-mid="14773139"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

It works

Imagine making a phone call... from a web app. Mozilla is working with vendors to enable the web as an open platform for mobile. Creating standard API's for messaging, accelerometers, radios, batteries, cameras, and more. Everything you see in these layouts has been implemented and actually works. It's pretty unreal the first time you see it in action. The web is getting a heck of an upgrade.

&#60;img src="http://payload29.cargocollective.com/1/0/24332/2888526/b2g_screens_2_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="618" width_o="1000" height_o="618" src_o="http://payload29.cargocollective.com/1/0/24332/2888526/b2g_screens_2_o.jpg" data-mid="14806588"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload29.cargocollective.com/1/0/24332/2888526/b2g_screens_3_6_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="618" width_o="1000" height_o="618" src_o="http://payload29.cargocollective.com/1/0/24332/2888526/b2g_screens_3_6_o.jpg" data-mid="14756848"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

It's the Web!

Being able to View Source on a mobile OS is very, very cool. In fact, we made a button for it. Press the "menu" hardware button on one of our Samsung Galaxy SII demo devices, and an overlay appears, displaying the HTML of the current page.

See something you don't like? Fire up Git, grab the Gaia repository and start hacking. The feeling of empowerment is pretty awesome. The first time I tried it, I called it a personal power of grayskull moment. Dislike your phone's letter spacing? Annoyed at the scrolling performance? Want to create a new WebGL game? You can do it. You already know how. Just check out at the following:

&#60;img src="http://payload29.cargocollective.com/1/0/24332/2888526/b2g_dev_1_2_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="618" width_o="1000" height_o="618" src_o="http://payload29.cargocollective.com/1/0/24332/2888526/b2g_dev_1_2_o.jpg" data-mid="14707471"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

It's powerful

Performance and responsiveness are crucial to quality mobile user experience. The immediacy of touch input demands equal immediacy in device response. We're just not as patient as we used to be. In response (and full agreement), the Boot to Gecko project has made performance a fundamental project priority, and our engineers have already achieved impressive results. On even modest hardware we're seeing competitive boot times, hardware accelerated CSS animation, smooth video playback with transparent overlays, prioritized responsiveness, and more. We are fully committed to empowering an explosion of Web-based UX creativity.

&#60;img src="http://payload29.cargocollective.com/1/0/24332/2888526/b2g_videoplayer_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="618" width_o="1000" height_o="618" src_o="http://payload29.cargocollective.com/1/0/24332/2888526/b2g_videoplayer_o.jpg" data-mid="14725534"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

It's just getting started

Building Gaia has been an awesome experience, and we've only scratched the surface. By leveraging skill sets and tools we've been using for years, our team has been able to put together a functioning concept with remarkable efficiency and minimal learning curve. Gaia and the enabling technologies that drive it are only going to get better, and we're very excited for what comes next. It's going to be awesome.

&#60;img src="http://payload29.cargocollective.com/1/0/24332/2888526/b2g_process_9_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="618" width_o="1000" height_o="618" src_o="http://payload29.cargocollective.com/1/0/24332/2888526/b2g_process_9_o.jpg" data-mid="14774636"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

		<description>2010 — Educational interactive exhibit. School children learn about the downstream effects of river basin pollution by applying water and food-based "pollutants" to an infographic map. Worked with a volunteer team of designers in creative director role, sketching concept, designing prototypes, and overseeing fabrication and assembly. Big thanks to an amazing crew: German Pombo, Roger Dario, Jesse Lang, and Casey Yee
